On December 4, 2009, Professor Wang Chengshan was invited by CEE to give a presentation regarding Distributed Generation and Intelligent Distribution System, at Electrical Engineering Building on Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University. He is now the chief scientist of the National "973 Plan" project, distinguished professor of the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" by Ministry of Education, and Dean of School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Tianjin University. The lecture was chaired by Professor Gan Deqiang, vice dean of CEE, with the participation of more than 50 teachers and students of related disciplines.
Prof. Wang first introduced development and characteristics of distributed generation systems, as well as problems residing in parallel operation of distributed generation. Based on these, he brought up the concept of microgrid, pointing out the advantages of microgrid operations in both enhancing effective functioning time of distributed generation and improving continuous power capacity of major load in power disasters. Meanwhile, he put forward problems that microgrid had in its operating characteristics, optimization design, protection and control, simulation technology, energy optimization and management, etc. which were worthy of study. In the second part of his presentation, Prof. Wang presented to the audience the related content of intelligent distribution system from a technical level. He pointed out that the system will enable the new energy a more effective access to the system, and that within future distribution system there will be existence of numerous microgrids which will completely change the characteristics of distribution system. Finally he suggested new problems arise from intelligent distribution system such as planning theory and methods for new distribution system of microgrid, control for microgrid and microgrid distribution system, and distribution system protection for distributed generation and microgrid.
