The project of DC Ice-melting and Dynamic Reactive Power Compensation Device in 500kV Shuanglong Substation is under successful trail operation in Jinhua Shuanglong substation, Zhejiang province on November 19, 2009. Professor Jiang Daozhuo and research fellow Liang Yiqiao from CEE preside over the research and development of the project. After inputting 5000 amps DC current (60 MW) to 500 kV Shuangxin 5465 line, the surface temperature of transmission lines met the requirement of ice-melting and each node’s ice-melting test monitoring results showed that system function of the device has fully achieved the expected goal. The Device was accomplished smoothly on November 13 with 90 Mvar dynamic reactive power compensation test. The success of the trail operation marks a comprehensive and successful development of China's most advanced DC ice-melting and dynamic reactive power compensation system with independent intellectual property rights.
The unprecedented natural disaster in 2008 brought by the harsh snow storm and blizzard in most areas of China, has seriously affected agricultural and industrial production and people’s daily life, and has brought about hundreds of billions of RMB in economic loss. There were the occurrence of serious accidents such as ice coating, line breaks, towers falling and ice flashover on large amount lines of Zhejiang Power Grid, especially in the 500 kV Shuanglong substation located in southwestern part of Zhejiang province. As a hub of East China Power Grid, ten 500 kV outlet lines of the substation are distributed mostly in mountain areas, some even across cold, rainy and foggy high-altitude mountain areas. When the most serious ice-coating occurred, only one 500 kV lines were kept operating, which had serious damages on the safety and stablility of Zhejiang Power Grid operation, and even the East China Power Grid operation.
To prevent such damages from happening again, Professor Jiang’s research group managed to declare 500kv Double Dragon Varible DC Ice-melting and Dynamic Reactive Power Compensation System - the scientific and technological project of State Grid Corporation -in collabaration with Zhejiang Electric Power Company, the total investment is about 80 million RMB. His group undertook the core part of the project. Due to its tight schedule and arduous tasks, leaders from both college and university attached great importance to its development to ensure an orderly implementation of the project. The research group collaborated closely with other parties, tackled a number of technical difficulties, and made several innovation achievements. They made great efforts to provide a strong guarantee for the succeessful operation of the System and ice prevention of China power grids. The implementation of the project contributes to accumulating a wealth of valuable experience in transformation of scientific and technological achievements under the background of school-enterprise cooperation.
