The 9th Symposium on Linear Drives for Industry Application (LDIA2013) organized by Zhejiang University was held successfully in Zhejiang hotel, Hangzhou from July 7 to 10, 2013. There were 148 participants from more than ten countries, such as UK, USA, Japan, Germany, Korea, Netherland, Australia, Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Libya, Algeria, China, etc. The conference got the support from Zhejiang University and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

This conference provided a forum for researchers, professionals and engineers from all over the world to present their latest researches and developments and exchange information and experience in the fields of linear drives and other types of direct drive technologies. The scopes included but were not limited to: linear machine design and analysis, linear motor drive systems and control, actuators, maglev linear systems, linear motor applications, renewable energies associated with linear machines, and high-speed or low-speed/high-torque rotary machines and drives, etc. Regarded as the most influential and a leading biennial international conference in the field of linear drive, eight symposiums were held successfully in Nagasaki (Japan, 1995), Tokyo (Japan, 1998), Nagano (Japan, 2001), Birmingham (UK, 2003), Kobe(Japan, 2005), Lile (France, 2007), Incheon (Korea, 2009), and Eindhoven (Netherland, 2011).

This Symposium on Linear Drives for Industry Application (LDIA2013) is the ninth and first held in China. During four days, 11 topics are included. There were a total of 201 digests sent from 14 Countries, from which 148 high-quality papers were finally accepted in the proceedings after peer reviews.

The opening ceremony was presided by Prof. Qinfen Lu, the organizing committee chairman. Prof. Yunyue Ye, the conference chairman, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the organizer. Prof. Hiroyuki Ohsaki, the chairman of international steering committee, gave a speech to introduce LDIA history and thank the organizer. The closing ceremony was presided by Prof. Jianxin Shen, the technical program committee chairman. Prof. Z.Q. Zhu, the conference chairman, made a conclusion including the number of participants, the number of papers, proceeding publication and the technical co-sponsored by IEEE Industry Applications Society first time. Prof. Hameyer, RWTH Aachen University introduced the schedule and plan of LDIA2015.

The wonderful keynote speeches were arranged after the short opening ceremony and before the closing ceremony. As four world renowned technical leaders in linear drives area, Prof. J.F. Eastham, Bath University, UK, Prof. Hiroyuki Ohsaki, the University of Tkoyo, Japan, Prof. J.F. Gieras, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Bydgoszcz, Poland and Prof.Yunyue Ye introduced modern developments in linear induction machines for electromagnetic launch systems, linear motor applications in transportation systems- development and commercial service in Japan, linear electric motors in machining processes, research and development of linear motor technology in China respectively, and discussed ardently with participants. In the afternoon of July 8 and in the whole day of July 9,there were the technical sessions including nine oral presentation sessions and three poster sessions. After the closing ceremony, the maglev technical tour was arranged.

Zhejiang University has long history in the research of linear motor and plenty achievements. Its faculties has been involved in a variety of research areas and reached the international leading level. The successful holding of the symposium was more than international academic exchanges between Zhejiang University and other countries. It helped further to improve both the international influence and innovation capacity of electrical motors and the University as well.
